26 Apr Anzac Day visitor
In the GDFNL we saw the clash of traditional rivals Inverleigh and Bannockburn as a stand-alone game on Anzac Day. Our special guest for the day was former Bannockburn footballer Corporal Chris Kucharski who is still an active member of our armed forces, having recently served in Afghanistan.
Chris captained the 2001 Bannockburn Under 18 premiership, but his own career finished after a consecutive wave of injuries diminished his passion. A broken ankle, hyperextension of the elbow and finally a depressed fracture of the cheekbone and broken eye socket sent him into early retirement.
Chris had taken a keen interest in the meaning of Anzac Day from an early age, attending the dawn service at Torquay regularly and with friends in the armed forces setting an example, he was naturally drawn to service. He enlisted in the Army Infantry Corp as a 31 year old and completed his basic training in Wagga Wagga. He is now posted to the 3rd Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment based in Townsville, Queensland.
