GDFL Broadcast Match: Challis psyched for Sykes

Corio playing coach Andy Challis has cast the spotlight on one of his rising stars ahead of the Devils’ clash with Werribee on 94.7fm the Pulse this Saturday.

The reigning wooden spooner was annihilated by Bannockburn in Round 1 and left with a percentage of 10.70 before showing slight improvement against North Geelong last week.

“Last week we played Mitch Sykes and he was our best player on the ground,” Challis revealed.

“It was really good to see a kid come up and throw some guys down; one North Geelong guy gave him a shove and he wasn’t afraid to give it back.”

Hayden Kerger, who starred in last year’s Colts grand final, may also be in contention for his first senior game in season 2018.

“That’s positive aggression and I’ll justify that, no brawling and fighting but at the same time I want to see my boys stand their ground,” Challis said.

“Mitch is more than capable of becoming a great senior player.”

Last week’s 75-point loss also saw the return of former Anakie and East Geelong midfielder Luke Priddle who looks to expose the void left by Centurion vice captain Chris Koutzamanis (suspended).

“Luke Priddle came back over the weekend and once the game got going he got better,” he said.

“He (Priddle) had five weeks on the sidelines but it was good to have him back.”

Though the Devils will be without Dylan Shelley (hamstring) for a further two weeks Werribee stars Nick Baldwin, Jackson Smith and Brayden Sneddon may also join Luke Cachia (quad) on the sidelines.

Challis continued, “Realistically, we have five or six guys who can run and break the lines so we look forward to this week’s clash.”
