21 Apr Blues 80-point winners over Thomson
Winchelsea coach Brendan Forssman has revealed that he may make up to two changes in his lineup for this Wednesday’s ANZAC Day clash with Bannockburn.
The Blues backed up their 92-point victory over Anakie last week with a solid 80-point triumph of Thomson last night (recording a scoring shot differential of 31 to 11).
Tomorrow night the second year mentor will cast the spotlight on all of his players’ recovery when selecting his best possible line-up.
“It’s well documented that they’ve (Bannockburn) lost (Jack) Brauman, (Jake) Peters and (Jason) Tom but their structures have held up against the best sides in the competition,” Forssman said.
Wednesday’s match-up initially sparked criticism from opposition supporters who had been accustomed to the Bannockburn vs. Inverleigh match up in recent years.
However many onlookers have witnessed enough from the Blues under lights in the past fortnight to be convinced that this second vs. third affair will be a mouth watering clash.
“This was our second straight four quarter performance; we weren’t at our best in Round 1 then we improved in Round 2 and tonight was our best performance yet,” Forssman said.
Veterans Matt Worland and Joshua Carracher were amongst the best alongside Heath Walsh Jnr and Alexander Gubbins (both had an injury plagued 2017 season).
Up forward former interleague star Tavae Sauni redeemed his inaccuracy of the opening rounds (after booting tallies of 1.5 and 1.6) when finding three goals in the second quarter alone.
And as for the defenders, the Blues are currently ranked first for ‘points against’ ahead of Inverleigh, Bannockburn, Bell Post Hill and Werribee Centrals.
“I think we’ve had a really good chop out from the midfielders who are working both ways, a lot of the footy coming into our back-50 is coming in under pressure,” a modest Forssman explained.
“That gives us an opportunity to get a plus-one back and win the footy when it hits the deck so as good as it was tonight our attention is already on Bannockburn this Wednesday.”
Reigning club best and fairest Jackson Smith will enter the commemorative clash as Winchelsea’s favourite for the ANZAC Day medal while Tiger Matt Tyquin remains the favourite for the home side.
“I don’t think we have any out and out superstars, this year it’s a much more even contribution from around the ground,” Forssman added.
“Jackson Smith has done well and he does what he does but we’re not overly reliant on him because we’ve used him as a forward as well this year.”
“In the last couple of years he’s played exclusively in the midfield because we haven’t had that depth so everyone is chipping in and contributing and that’s what we ask for.”
