MEANWHILE Corio playing coach Andy Challis will head to the tribunal tonight after he was reported for striking Werribee midfielder Darryl Chesterman in his side’s 121-point defeat.

The incident happened just minutes after Werribee forward Nathan Johnson was also reported for striking Devil Jeremy Large (by which time the Centurions had held a 109-point lead).

“I received a high tackle and I wasn’t happy with the contact I had received so I was a bit frustrated but that’s just footy,” Challis said.

“I put my flat hand out on his face but I wasn’t that forceful, the umpire said I aggressively struck him but he may have viewed it from a different way so I’ll challenge the two weeks.”

“I don’t think it was seriously a two week ban; perhaps a reprimand but I’m really disappointed.”

“I’ve seen so many worse incidents in the past and to get that treatment was devastating.”

Challis

“Werribee players even came up to me and said there was nothing in it but you obviously have to give the umpire the benefit of the doubt.”

Opposing coach Nick Smith was just as baffled with the decision making when speaking in the visitors’ rooms post-match.

“I don’t’ understand why they make something of it, they were two bulls butting in a paddock so if you want to pay a free kick then pay it,” Smith said.

“I know it wasn’t striking, it wasn’t assault and the second man came in to bait him and got pushed to the ground.”

“If that’s striking then wow, I would have got some weeks back in my day.”

The Devils found the opening two goals of the game through Chris Warwick and Challis before recording their highest score for the season by the second quarter.

Todd Smith also collected 36 disposals in the absence of his co-captain Dylan Shelley (hamstring), Steve Poynton (knee), Anthony Grace (vertigo), Kyle O’Toole and Paddy Baskin (suspended).

A FIVE GOAL HAUL from North Geelong recruit Beau Runnalls would not be enough for the Magpies to hold off Geelong West who recorded a 13.14 (92) to 8.6 (54) win.

INVERLEIGH proved too good for the Lions with 15 individual goal-kickers in their 31.20 (206) to 5.11 (41) dismantling; Jak Kennedy Hunt found eight goals in the process.

Inverleigh

BELL POST HILL AND BANNOCKBURN celebrated massive wins over East Geelong and Anakie respectively with Nick Costello finding eight goals in the Panthers’ win.

WINCHELSEA cemented a second straight win under lights to the surprise of many (see full story here).
