16 Jul Georgia Duncan makes the play
Netballer of the week.
The Bannockburn netball team are working very hard to improve on their third place finish from last season and are slowly building toward the first big test of their improvement against Werribee Centrals on June 29th at Bannockburn. One of the catalysts for the surge this season has been the form of their vibrant goal attack Georgia Duncan. She has been joined in the circle this year by the very experienced goal shooter Sarah Fisher. Two pair have quickly developed a great understanding and share the workload evenly to make match ups difficult.
When she caught up with the Footy Record this week, Georgia was extremely complimentary of the guidance provided by coach Lee Potter. The focus has been on spreading the responsibility across the full court and Lee has given every player the confidence to own their position and play with flair and aggression. This has allowed a smooth linkage between each section of the court, giving the team confidence that further improvement will naturally flow. An improving mid court has assisted Georgia, as the entry has been smooth and reliable in setting up scoring opportunities. The Tigers only blemish in 2019 was a 14 goal loss to East Geelong in round 4, where the tall Eagles defenders where able to keep Georgia and Sarah under wraps. That experience will provide important insight into future outings where the undersized pair are exposed.
Georgia arrived in Geelong from Horsham to commence studies as an Occupational Therapist at Deakin University. Now in her fourth year of study she sees Geelong as her new home, having settled into the region nicely. She commenced her netball at the Horsham Demons FNC who have had an unprecedented recent success on the football ground, winning 13 premierships since 2003. Her partner Nathan Kelly is also a Horsham product and he followed her to Geelong and first found the Bannockburn club. He then encouraged Georgia to join the netball team and the couple are loving the environment.
Bannockburn have certainly benefited from the arrival of the young Wimmera couple and they appear comfortable for a long stay. We look forward to seeing the Tigers propel towards the finals, with the dynamic Georgia Duncan playing a vital role.
