NETBALL: Neeson sidelined for Panthers

Netball can be cruel sometimes.

For reigning Bell Post Hill A-Grade best and fairest Molly Neeson, an ankle injury would dampen the Panthers’ hopes of conquering Inverleigh on Sunday.

“I was training (on Thursday) and running backwards before rolling my ankle while trying to turn around,” Neeson explained.

“I think I’ve damaged some ligaments and there’s still some swelling so I’ll be spending some weeks on the sidelines.”

The Panthers now sit on the bottom of the A-Grade table with a 0-4 record; situated below the winless Winchelsea who they will meet in Round 8.

This was not the start Neeson, 21, had hoped for after flirting with the idea of also playing for Bell Post Hill’s woman’s football team as a potential 189cm tall ruckwoman.

However such is the chirpy team leader’s passion for her new club that she stepped up to the plate on Sunday as a sidelined interim coach.

“Last week we didn’t have Joy Grubb (illness on the day) but we ended showcasing some good passages of play so I see Round 4 as a starting point,” she explained.

“It was so close against Belmont in Round 1 (47 to 46) and a really good start for us because we had six new players on that team.”

Bell Post Hill will still have big tests against finals contenders Corio (away) before taking on bottom (half) sides Geelong West, Anakie and Winchelsea (away).

“Teagan (Jolly) and I haven’t had time to play together in defence yet so it will be exciting for us two play finally play together when I return.”

“Last week she (Jolly) played really well so I’m very excited to line-up next to her for the first time this season when we get the chance.”

Monique Grozdanovski was one of the Panthers’ few shining lights in their 65 to 29 loss according to her interim coach.

“She’s slotted herself into the goals and now she’s been really strong in helping with passages of play and assisting Abbey (Croft) who really thrives on the goalling end.”
