15 Jun Spotlight on Anakie skipper in absence of star recruit
Anakie coach Chris Moore has confirmed his captain Jamie Phillis will start at full forward in tomorrow’s bottom of the table clash against Corio.
A win for the Roos will see the side climb from 11th to ninth assuming both Belmont and East Geelong are unable to hold off Werribee and Bannockburn respectively (both away).
“He’s (Phillis) a natural forward but due to circumstances he’s had to fill spots in the midfield and other positions as a pinch-hitter for a few years now,” Moore said.
“We defend well and don’t put the score on the board so that’s why we thought Jamie Pitman would be able to put the score on the board before the season.”
“Sadly, he (Pitman) only lasted three quarters (PCL injury against Thomson) and we’re missing John Gillett as well.”
He continued, “Our midfield is strong so the onus is on them to win the footy and win us the game.”
Moore will hope to take his head to head record to 4-1 over Corio despite the absence of key senior players.
These include Kyle Eibl, Anthony Quarrell, Luke McConachy, Brad Cockerell and Mitchell Vicary as well as John Gillett, Jamie Pitman and the now retired Jamie Grace.
“We’re going in with a side where players will be in positions that they’re not used to but we’ve gone in with a side that is going to get us over the line,” Moore added.
“Obviously it’s a bitter pill to swallow when you’re reading the paper in the morning and see your side is in the wooden spoon discussion.”
He added, “I thought that in the last three we weeks we sort of turned the corner a little bit with the win over East Geelong and the draw with Werribee before that.”
“Last week we did get jumped in the first quarter against Inverleigh but then we kicked three goals to five and fought it out.”
The Roos will then play Geelong West (away), Thomson (away), Winchelsea and Bannockburn (away).
