Werribee A-Graders ready for redemption

Werribee Centrals’ netball coaches Nicole Weatherley and Melissa Prismall almost received a standing ovation at the club’s season launch last night such was the honesty of their pre-season assessment.

“We have had a lot of interest from a large number of diverse players and we’ve had a great turnout so far this pre-season with many new faces on board,” Prismall said.

“Our aim as a club this is to qualify for the finals across all grades of netball and for B-Grade to win a third consecutive grand final.”

She added, “Then our third and final is for our A-Grade side to regain the premiership after a disappointing end to what was otherwise a very successful season.”

Last year the Centurions produced a remarkable 47-game winning streak in the top tier before facing a surprise 37 to 35 defeat to contender Thomson in Round 16.

While the powerhouse would bounce back and enter their fifth straight grand final having won 51 of a possible 52 games they would again been trumped by the Tigers and unable to claim an elusive fifth straight A-Grade title.

“There is no greater fuel than losing a grand final, nobody wants to feel that again,” Weatherley said.

“It was a very crucial game, mistakes were made and we may not have been at our best that day.”

“But Thomson was the best team in 2017 so we’re going to continue to work harder than they have this pre-season.”

Werribee will look to hold a strong 2-0 start to the season before taking on fellow finals contender Corio in Round 3, this year.

“The other teams would be silly not to be recruiting as well but we want to be back on top,” she added.
