Round 7 Review: West land 11 straight goals in 30-point win

Geelong West has returned to the top half of the ladder thanks to a come-from-behind 30-point win over East Geelong.

The Eagles strung together five straight goals early to capture a 23-point lead before the visitors responded with the next 11 to the joy of third year coach Andrew Clark.

“At quarter time we butchered the footy and didn’t spread from the stoppages which was disappointing,” Clark said.

“Some onballers were just treading water and looked slow but thankfully we structured up better after the first break.”

Earlier in the afternoon, returning assistant coach Aaron O’Callaghan landed the game’s opening goal 420 days after injuring his knee in Round 1, last year.

However the star of the day would be third year Giant Brayden Mitchell after the 21-year-old landed seven goals and an assist.

“Brayden really enjoyed interleague playing alongside quality players so we talked about how now he’s played in that game he needs to come back and stamp his authority,” Clark said.

“You only have to look at his contests today and with seven goals I think he did.”

The return of Michael Leamer and Ryan Ganz allowed for a more dominant midfield in the second half with Alex Blair finding 22 disposals and 12 marks on a wing.

Scott Galloway (calf) and Justin White (overseas) will remain out of the side next week however Clark believes his men can still hold off Inverleigh.

“I’ve told the boys to enjoy the next hour, have a beer but remember the massive challenge we have this week,” Clark said.

“We’re backing ourselves next week; we need to beat some of these top sides.”

“After the Bell Post Hill game we had a talk across the whole group and agreed that we can beat anybody.”

He continued, “We proved it with Bannockburn nearly all day and we proved it against Bell Post Hill until the final kick of the game.”

“But we need to win one of those so now we have an opportunity.”

East Geelong coach Jeremy Power remained positive ahead of a blockbuster clash against Anakie next week.

“If a few guys drop their head over a decision then more will follow that example in such a young group looking back today,” Power said.

“But we’re starting to get a feel of where we are heading so there’s positives.”

Earlier in the day Geelong West recruit B’Jay King broke his leg in the reserves game with the match abandoned at three quarter time.

Two ambulance vans were used to escort the 29-year-old off the ground while the Eagles were rewarded with a 7.7 (49) to 5.3 (33) victory.

In other games, a 10 goal haul from midfielder Simon Seddon inspired Inverleigh to a whopping 224-point win over Corio.

A strong start for Winchelsea proved enough to capture a 64-point win over the Lions with youngster William Ford finding seven goals.

Thomson held off an injury plagued North Geelong outfit by 25-points in the closest game of the round.

North Geelong utility Tom Mathieson found five goals while loyal clubmen Mathew Jones (150 games), Dylan Fisher (100) and Thomas Davis (50) all played in milestone games.
