Ivan Tansing Medal: Three way tie for Giant, Magpie & Hawk!

Ivan Tansing Medal: Three way tie for Giant, Magpie & Hawk!

North Geelong legend Derek Fitzsimmons has added to his long list of achievements in the GDFL by collecting his first Ivan Tansing medal.

The 37-year-old tied with Benjamin Podger-Carroll (Geelong West) and 2016 recipient Brenton Gillett (Inverleigh) on 17 votes ahead in the medal’s first time since 2011.

Podger-Carroll became the club’s first reserves league best and fairest since Donato Pietrapertosa in 1987.

Fitzsimmons lead the count by a vote after Round 11 before Podger-Carroll, in his first year at Geelong West, polled eight votes in three rounds to grab the 17 to 14 lead after Round 16.

After a quiet first half to the season Gillett would equal the Giant in the final round with two votes before Fitzsimmons added another three moments later to again draw level.

The count would come down to the final game of the count when Geelong West was pipped by East Geelong 5.11 (41) to 7.4 (46).

East Geelong players Joshua Molan and Tim Buckingham were called out before the final three votes were read.

Thankfully for Gillett and Fitzsimmons, Geelong West speedster would collect the three to withhold Podger-Carroll from the being the outright recipient.

Locke Perrett (Inverleigh) would finish fourth with 14 votes from his 10 reserves games ahead of first year Thomson Tiger Jordan Camm.

Bannockburn forward Hayden Illingworth found some votes early but would fail to poll after Round 10.
