GDFNL History Project: Just Six Presidential Photos Remain Missing

The Geelong & District Football Netball League (GDFNL) is calling on the local football community for assistance as its historical research project moves closer to completion.

Following months of research and assistance from local historians and heritage organisations just six former presidents remain without a photograph in the league's historical collection.

Much like today, when the Geelong region is represented by three major football competitions, the 1930s also featured three separate leagues operating across the district.

These competitions had their own administrations and presidents before changes to the local football landscape eventually brought clubs and leagues together.

As a result, some presidential terms overlap, reflecting the different competitions that form part of the GDFNL's historical origins.

The league is seeking photographs of:

  • Cr Alfred Sayers (1905–1909)

  • Albert H. Langdon (1926–1933) – Passed away in 1944. An official of Belmont Bowling Club.

  • Bert Mason (1936–1938)

  • Eric J. Grogan (1936–1937)

  • Les "Guv" Smith (1942–1955) – A photograph is believed to have appeared in the Geelong Advertiser between March and September 1959.

  • Bert Herni (1979) – Had connections with the Lara Football Club during the 1970s.

The GDFNL sincerely thanks everyone who has contributed to the project, helping preserve the stories and contributions of those who shaped local football across generations.

Can you help complete this important piece of Geelong football history?
